Located on a hilltop overlooking the scenic Susquehanna River Valley in northeastern Pennsylvania, the Susquehanna Steam Electric Station (SSES) is a 2,630-megawatt facility with two boiling water reactors and two closed-cycle cooling towers. As a result of Extended Power Uprate (EPU) work, Susquehanna now proudly operates one of the largest Boiling Water Reactor (BWR) sites in the United States, generating more than 2,600 megawatts in total, at optimum conditions.

Susquehanna is located about seven miles north of Berwick and is owned jointly by Susquehanna Nuclear LLC and Allegheny Electric Cooperative Inc. and is operated by Susquehanna Nuclear LLC, one of Talen Energy Corporation’s generating affiliates. For information, visit www.susquehannanuclear.com.

Pennsylvania Power & Light applied to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission for a construction permit in April 1971. The NRC issued the permit Nov. 2, 1973, and construction began later that month. Unit 1 began commercial operations in 1983 and Unit 2 in 1985. The units began generating electricity under 40-year operating licenses. In November 2009, following a rigorous process and review, the NRC granted a 20-year extension of the original licenses, allowing both Susquehanna units to operate until 2042 and 2044, respectively.

The 1,200-acre site located in Salem Township, Luzerne County, was selected for its stable geology, available cooling water from the Susquehanna River, accessible power supply lines to other parts of the service area and convenient highway and rail transportation. General Electric Co. designed the plant’s twin reactors. Bechtel Power Corp. served as the primary contractor.

With equipment and system upgrades completed during the 2010 and 2011 refueling and maintenance outage, respectively, Unit 1 and Unit 2 became the largest BWRs in terms of thermal power and generating capacity in the United States. When operating at 100 percent power, each unit has the capacity of 3,952 megawatts thermal (a measure of the heat produced in the reactor) and over 1,300 megawatts electrical (a measure of the electricity produced by the generator).

At 1.1 million kilowatts, Fermi 2 represents 30 percent of Michigan’s total nuclear generating capacity. This single-unit plant can produce enough electricity to serve a city of about one million people. Fuel costs are about half those of the most efficient coal-fired plants.

Fermi 2 began commercial operation in 1988. The plant employs about 850 workers and produces about 15 percent of the power generated by DTE’s power plants.

In December, 2016, Fermi 2 received renewal of its operating license from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The renewal enables Fermi 2 to produce electricity for its customers in southeast Michigan until 2045.

In 2001, Fermi 2 was the first nuclear power plant in the state to achieve Clean Corporate Citizen (C3) status. The Department of Environmental Quality’s voluntary C3 program recognizes top performers in environmental management and stewardship. Fermi 2 has maintained the designation every year since 2001. The plant has also maintained Wildlife Habitat Council certification since 2000 and has set aside 600 acres for inclusion in the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge. That property is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Fermi 2 is owned by Detroit-based DTE Energy. It is located along the western shores of Lake Erie in Monroe County, Mich.

Cooper Nuclear Station

Owned and operated by Nebraska Public Power District, Cooper Nuclear Station (CNS) is the largest single-unit electrical generator in the state of Nebraska. CNS generates 800 megawatts of electricity and accounts for roughly 25 percent of NPPD’s total annual generation.

Plant construction began in 1968, and the unit was put into commercial operation in July of 1974. In November 2010, CNS’ operating license was renewed, extending its commercial operation to 2034.

Located three miles south of Brownville in southeast Nebraska, the facility is named after natives Guy Cooper, Jr., and Guy Cooper, Sr., in recognition of their contributions to public power in Nebraska.

CNS employs approximately 750 full-time personnel.

Cook Nuclear Plant

The Cook Nuclear Plant is located on 650 acres along Lake Michigan’s eastern shoreline. The tract is part of the world’s largest formation of freshwater dunes. The plant is owned and operated by American Electric Power.

The construction permit for the plant was granted by the Atomic Energy Commission in 1969. It was one of the largest construction projects ever in the state of Michigan with over 2,000 workers at the site. The plant was named for the late Donald C. Cook, a Michigan native, and former chairman of the board of American Electric Power. Unit 1 began commercial operation in August of 1975 and Unit 2 in July of 1978.

Both units are pressurized water reactors. The 1,030 net megawatt (MW) Unit 1 and 1,077 net MW Unit 2 combined produce enough electricity for more than one and one half million average homes. The American Electric Power Service Corporation served as architect and engineer for the project. The nuclear steam supply system for both units were designed and built by Westinghouse Corporation. The turbine generators for Unit 1 and Unit 2 were purchased from General Electric Company and Brown Boveri Corporation respectively.

AEP’s nuclear generation group is headquartered in Buchanan, Michigan. The building, located twenty miles from the plant, also houses some of the nuclear plant’s emergency plan facilities.

AEP ranks among the nation’s largest generators of electricity, owning nearly 38,000 megawatts of generating capacity in the U.S. AEP also owns the nation’s largest electricity transmission system, a nearly 39,000-mile network that includes more 765 kilovolt extra-high voltage transmission lines than all other U.S. transmission systems combined. AEP’s transmission system directly or indirectly serves about 10 percent of the electricity demand in the Eastern Interconnection, the interconnected transmission system that covers 38 eastern and central U.S. states and eastern Canada, and approximately 11 percent of the electricity demand in ERCOT, the transmission system that covers much of Texas. AEP’s utility units operate as AEP Ohio, AEP Texas, Appalachian Power (in Virginia and West Virginia), AEP Appalachian Power (in Tennessee), Indiana Michigan Power, Kentucky Power, Public Service Company of Oklahoma, and Southwestern Electric Power Company (in Arkansas, Louisiana and east Texas). AEP’s headquarters are in Columbus, Ohio.
